Leon Mullaney started out in a tiny shop called Thimble Hall on Matlock Green in 1966, after having served his apprenticeship in Darley Dale with his cousin, Ken wild.
The little shop became a popular meeting place for friends and customers. When turning up for a hair cut, you may have found a jamming session or a band rehearsal of the Teen Scenes in process. Even a sign on the door saying "Closed, watching the football, Why aren't you?!" as England went on to win the World Cup.
With the popularity of the growing business, Leon soon took the opportunity to move to larger premises around the corner where the business continued to grow alongside Leon's family, as he married Vivien Hurley and they went on to have two children. In 1977, the family moved to 86 Bank Road where the business is still going strong.
Leon soon trained up Vivien who must have been the first female barber in the area. They ran the business together until Leon pursued other interests and concentrated on the business side of hairdressing, while Vivien concentrated on the barbering aspect of the job. Daughter Rebecca joined her mother at the age of 16 and they worked together as hairstylists, just the two of them for 17 years. As Rebecca started her own family and went part time, the Mullaney family employed Marion, Vanessa, and Dez. Vivien retired in 2010 after 40 years in the salon. Leon continues to take care of the business aspect of the barbershop. Now Bec is back fulltime in the salon.
